Rosacea? And what you can do to minimise it!

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin condition which often starts between the ages of 30 and 60. Rosacea is a condition that causes redness and often small, red, pus-filled bumps on the face. Rosacea is also known to often cause irritation, dryness, sensitivity and burning etc.

What causes Rosacea?

Research has found that people with fair skin appear to be more prone to rosacea and tends to be in both men and women. The exact cause of rosacea is still unknown and whilst it is not curable it can be effectively managed to help keep flare ups under control, although there does appear to be a link with gut health and rosacea.

Director of Research at Medik8, Daniel Isaacs says ‘There are many potential contributing factors of rosacea; an impaired skin barrier can allow irritants to enter the skin, causing inflammation, and free radical damage can also play a part in intensifying inflammation. It’s important to implement daily sun protection as well as anti-pollution skincare in your regime’

Different foods and drinks may provoke rosacea flare ups. It tends to be different for everyone and so to find out what triggers it, it’s advisable to keep a food diary. Common triggers include:
– Hot beverages
– Alcohol
– Spicy food
– Fermented foods (cheese, pickled vegetables, canned fish)
– Stress
– Food additives

Here are some tips from experts for dealing with rosacea:
1. Reduce touching your face – Cleanse with lukewarm water and use cleansers and concealers developed for sensitive skin.
2. The fragile capillaries of rosacea sufferers can be easily damaged by UV, resulting in thread veins and redness of the skin. Products rich in Vitamin B3 will also help protect from infrared, which has the same effect as UV rays.

It is best to avoid heavy oil-based creams, avoid ingredients that cause stinging, burning or increase facial redness and avoid topical steroids to the rosacea area. It is important to protect your skin from UV rays and use a light facial sunscreen daily, keep your face cool during summer, try to take cold-warm showers, minimise hot and spicy foods like curries, chilli’s, black pepper and keep a food diary to monitor symptoms and triggers.
