Preparing Your Skin for the Weather Change

With the arrival of Autumn, it is vital that we protect our skin from the windy and dry conditions. The drop in temperatures and harsh winds can have a devastating effect to both the look and health of our skin, so here are a few tips and tricks to protect yourself this Autumn!

  1. Swap Your Cleanser

The cleanser that you use during Autumn should be more gentle and milder in order to account for the cool conditions. Cleansers remove impurities and pollutants from your skin, but unfortunately also strip your skin of natural oils. This leaves your skin more vulnerable to the elements and can cause wrinkles and fine lines. Thus, it is important to experiment and find a product that both cleanses AND hydrates.

  1. Consider Exfoliation via a Cleanser

It is important to exfoliate your skin as exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells and impurities that result in a lackluster complexion. However, there is no need to go crazy with the harshest exfoliator you can find. I no longer recommended heavy exfoliation as there are cleansers on the market that have the ability to exfoliate in a gentle way which is far more beneficial for your complexion.

  1. Moisturise

Moisturising is a vital step in any skin routine and is especially important during the temperamental weather of Autumn! Harsh winds can significantly dry out your skin, so it is vital to replenish your skin with essential moisture. Moisturiser can also protect your skin from chapping and prevent the unwanted scaly look that can come about with constant exposure to cold air. You might need to buy a heavier, luxurious moisturiser depending on how cool the conditions are!

  1. Avoid long showers

Hot, steamy showers may be extremely tempting in cold weather, but they are actually very damaging to the skin! Hot water strips away natural oil faster than what our body can produce, thus resulting in dry skin.  This causes irritation and leaves your skin more vulnerable to external weather conditions. Hence, try to stick to lukewarm-warm temperatures and find a gentle, hydrating soap! And as always, remember to moisturize to replenish and lock in hydration.

  1. Wear sunscreen

Just because it is Autumn doesn’t mean that you can skimp out on sunscreen! Less sunlight doesn’t mean that harmful UV rays disappear, so make sure to protect your skin with SPF 30+ sunscreen.
