What you should know about Exfoliation.

There’re a few ways that we can go wrong with the skin exfoliation process, by overdoing it or not exfoliating enough.

You can use exfoliation products too often, which compromises the skin and can leave it sensitised, shiny and thin. Or you can use them too infrequently, leaving the skin dull, congested and sad. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. You should.

But why should you?

Skin exfoliation removes dry patches that are unsightly and hard to cover with makeup. It helps the skin retain moisture and makes it soft and supple. Overall, it keeps skin glowing, young, and healthy. Knowing your skin type is essential or else you may end up harming your skin. There are different types of skin like dry, oily, and sensitive, and these skin types have different ways to exfoliate!

Dry Skin

Get rid of that heavy-duty exfoliator since your skin is already dry and it can just make your problem worse. Get an exfoliator with the finest grains in a lotion or creamy texture, it should not just remove dead, dull skin, but also provide hydration. Always follow with a good moisturiser.

Oily Skin

Oily skin has more dead cells compared to other skin types and exfoliation is one of the best ways to reduce clogged pores and get smoother skin. Go for a physical exfoliator like a cleansing device or a scrub. Exfoliate 2-3 times a week for optimum results. Don’t over-exfoliate as it can cause your skin to dry out and produce even more oil.

Sensitive Skin

It is important to use gentle products to exfoliate your sensitive skin. Irritation and redness can easily be activated by both chemical and physical exfoliators. So, your best bet would be to use an exfoliating tool (cleansing sponge, cleansing pad, or brush) rather than a product.

What you need to know.

There are two kinds of exfoliation.

Physical exfoliation: which uses rough, jagged particles to physically scrub your face and clear it of old, and dirty build up.

Chemical exfoliation: which uses naturally occurring acids (usually AHAs or BHAs) to clear the skin of old skin cells. Plus, chemical exfoliants typically give a far more even and in-depth result, which is why we much prefer them.

Whichever you choose, you should be using your exfoliating products 2-3 times a week. No more! Your skin doesn’t need it.
