Try these skin-loving foods to help your skin glow this summer.

Healthy Skin on the Menu

Glowing, Healthy Skin is a must, in particular in Brisbane’s hot summer months where we are doubling up on sun protection. Of course, a good skincare regimen coupled with regular facial treatments go a long way to improving your skin’s appearance and preserving natural elasticity, however what we put in our bodies has a huge impact as well!

This article will discuss what we should be eating leading up to summer, rather than what we should be avoiding (because let’s face it, it’s the most temping time of year)

Capsicum

Whatever colour you prefer, capsicum offers amazing skin benefits. Capsicum also contains high levels of vitamin C which is a crucial nutrient for collagen production. Vitamin C also helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, agents that attack a cell’s DNA.

Berries

Brightly coloured berries contain antioxidants, which help neutralize free radicals that can damage the DNA of healthy skin cells. Blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries have some of the highest antioxidant levels of any food — and new research has found a link between the antioxidants in these berries and decreased incidence of UV damage, which is essential to avoid damaging sun rays in our Aussie Summer.

Cherries

A bowl of sherries can do wonders for your skin and is also a refreshing snack in summer! Studies have found that the chemicals in the tart fruit can help inhibit pigmentation and contain a hormone linked to slowing the aging process, boy do we love that!

Adding cherries and almonds boosts the skin benefits of your standard salad, yoghurt or smoothie!

Green Tea

One of the most powerful skin foods is a drink. Second only to water, This is another antioxidant powerhouse that offers protection against damage like UV rays and sun induced skin damage. Sipping green tea helps your skin repair itself and help fights premature aging.

Turkey

Lean protein, such as turkey provides skin with the building blocks for collagen and elastin, the fibres that help skin look firm and wrinkle free. Research also shows that the levels of zinc and niacin in ground turkey may also help treat inflammatory acne.

Olive Oil

You may consider olive oil as just a salad dressing, but it has some key benefits in its own right. This delicious oil is a crucial ingredient for healthy skin. A cornerstone of the über-healthy Mediterranean diet, olive oil helps fight oxidative damage (from the sun or pollution) and prevents inflammation, one of the main causes of premature aging — and research shows that increased olive oil consumption helps hydrate your skin from the inside.

Salmon

This meaty fish contains high levels of omega-3 fats which are known for their ability to fight inflammation — a damaging process that causes acne, premature aging, and irritation. Salmon contains a potent antioxidant (it’s what gives them their pink color), and they contain omega-3s for additional antioxidant power. Also a great source of zinc, an excellent anti-inflammatory that scientists have found can helps reduce acne breakouts.

Sweet Potatoes

A healthy alternative to plain potatoes and star of our favourite fries, sweet potatoes contain high levels of beta-carotene (what gives these tubers their trademark orange pigment). In addition to its antioxidant benefits, beta-carotene helps to encourage skin cell turnover, so the skin’s surface looks smooth and fresh.
