Tips for Improving Gut Health

Making sure we look after our gut health is vital. Caring for the health of our gut and maintaining the right balance of microorganisms, is vital for physical and mental health, immunity, and more.

Here are some tips on improving your gut health and making your skin and body glow from within.

1.Minimise processed foods

A diet high in processed foods and added sugars can decrease the amount of good bacteria in your gut. This imbalance can cause increased sugar cravings, which can damage your gut further. High amounts of refined sugars, particularly high-fructose corn syrup, have been linked to increased inflammation in the body. Inflammation can be the precursor to several diseases.

2.Eat a range of diverse foods

Start to incorporate more fruits. The more diverse your diet, especially plant foods, the more diverse your gut microbiome. Try to eat a variety of different foods rather than the same foods every day and mix up the colours and types of foods e.g., if you always eat green apples try red, eat different types of breads e.g., rye, spelt wholegrains and lots of different coloured fruits and vegetables. Even try change up your meals all together!

3.Fermented foods

Not only does fermentation help enhance food preservation but eating fermented foods can also boost the number of beneficial bacteria, or probiotics, found in your gut. Fermented foods such as Saukraut (strengthens your immune system, improves your digestion, reduces your risk of certain diseases, and helps with weight loss), Kimchi (lowers cholesterol and reduces insulin resistance), and Kefir (bone health) contain live bacteria and nutrients that can support a healthy gut.

4.Fibre and prebiotics

Start to include wholegrains, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, and legumes to ensure you are getting enough fibre and to support gut health. Vita-Sol’s Purity greens contains a blend of prebiotics, leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, wholegrains, kiwi fruit, acerola cherries, pumpkin, flax, and chia seeds.

5.Polyphenol rich foods

Polyphenolic nutrients come from plant foods such as red and blue foods e.g., berries, cherries, extra virgin olive oil, dark chocolate and even tea and coffee. Polyphenols has many benefits including skin antioxidant protectiveness, anti-inflammatory properties and enhances the skin’s cell growth.

6.Exercise

Walking, running, or doing any other sort of regular, physical activity is important for a healthy mind, body, and soul. Regular exercise and movement can help with mobility in our joints but also helps improve our gut health. Regular exercise helps keep your gut healthy and helps to regulate your immune system.
